Trump established a new government taskforce for artificial intelligence oversight, led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton. The unit, which Trump calls the "Super Intelligence Force," will coordinate federal engagement with technology companies, consumer groups and critical infrastructure providers, reporting directly to the president and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
Clayton will oversee the taskforce alongside Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor. Clayton took office as national intelligence director in August after Trump's initial pick was rejected by lawmakers. He previously served as US attorney for the Southern District of New York.
The taskforce creation follows pressure from major AI companies. On 29 September, Trump signed an executive order renaming artificial intelligence as "Super Intelligence" or "SI" across all federal communications, reports and official correspondence. Trump has stated he believes the term "artificial" makes the technology sound "fake."
On the same day, executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceX and Google signed what Trump described as a "morally binding" pact on AI safety. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman told Politico's technology newsletter on 4 October that the benefits of AI justify accepting some of its risks and that the technology should remain accessible to the public. "The world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency," Altman said.
Trump has resisted calls for stronger AI regulation, instead favoring company self-regulation. Some experts have questioned the rebranding to "Super Intelligence," arguing it could cause confusion since the term typically refers to more advanced systems than currently exist.
The rebranding has begun gaining adoption among tech leaders. Elon Musk said on social media Sunday that he will rename his firm's AI platform from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, stating that "SpaceX is a super intelligence company." Musk recently rejoined the Trump administration to lead a project studying the future of warfare.
