Anthropic reported quarterly revenue of $16.8 billion for the three months ending September, representing 45 percent growth, as the AI company briefed prospective investors Wednesday ahead of an expected stock market listing before year end, the BBC understands.

The revenue figure marks acceleration from $11.6 billion in the prior quarter and $4.7 billion in the first three months of the year. Anthropic also reported profitability for a second consecutive quarter, according to the company's investor briefing at its San Francisco headquarters.

An Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment on the figures.

The revenue disclosure arrives as public market concerns about AI infrastructure spending weigh on tech stocks. Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan told a Singapore conference Monday that many investors "have no clue" about AI returns and have set "extreme expectations only to find out that it's almost like they are in a casino."

That skepticism triggered sharp declines in semiconductor companies on Wednesday. AMD, Nvidia and Intel shares fell sharply. In Asia, Softbank shares dropped more than 9 percent Thursday morning. Samsung fell 9.4 percent and SK Hynix dropped 10.8 percent. South Korea's Kospi and Kosdaq indexes fell more than 8 percent, triggering trading halts. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell over 5 percent.

Anthropic's revenue performance and that of rival OpenAI provide indicators of the AI industry's growth trajectory and capacity to fund the data center infrastructure required for development. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said in September his company will not pursue a public listing this year as it addresses technology safety concerns. OpenAI is also eyeing a future stock market debut, expected to value the firm above $1 trillion.

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has called for a slowdown in development pace, citing AI risks. The company expanded its global footprint Wednesday by opening an office in Singapore.
